  • A lone bison grazes in front of Castle Geyser in the early morning light.

When the park was established in 1872 there were only about 25 wild and free bison in Yellowstone.  This photo of Geyser Hill and other thermal features with a bison in the foreground captures the spirit of why we have the park today.
